NOW

August 28, 2003 - Friday

It’s been a busy two weeks without a minute to update my journal.  Briefly, I’ll hit some of the highlights.

Most of the time involved dealing with my father who’s in the Coronado Hospital with congestive heart failure and pneumonia. Things were pretty bad at first and the doctor was skeptical of recovery but my dad dodged the bullet once again. Currently his biggest problem is an inability to swallow and a gastric tube for nutrients has been inserted directly into his stomach.

It was one of those situations where I was asked to decide just what sort of heroic measures we wanted to try before proceeding.  (I have power of attorney for health care and we also have a “do not resuscitate order on his chart).  Don’t have the time to describe all the discussions we had about this decision but many of you have probably been in the same situation.

Bottom line is that my dad is doing better and will probably go home on Monday, baring any setbacks.  It will an “in home” hospice situation with 24 hr observation.

Needless to say the vacation has been put on hold and we may give it a try in October. That’s pushing the weather envelope for backpacking in the Sierras though I’m not too concerned.  We’ve survived early snowstorms in the past.

I did manage to work in my HAM radio test last Saturday and on Wednesday was issued my call sign. KG6SIB for those familiar with the system.  Still undecided on where I’m going with this new hobby.  For now I’m observing the traffic on the frequencies, getting a feeling for what’s going on.

I’m taking the day off & looking forward to a four day weekend.

Regards to all,

Rob

THEN

July 5, 1967 - Wednesday
(continued from last entry)

"Time" summed up the hippie code in this way...

1 - "Do your own thing, wherever you are and whenever you want."

This, in general, means to reject "authority" and be yourself. They're not talking about laws. I guess the better way to say it is to reject "conformity".

I couldn't believe in that more.  I have always wanted to act myself without worrying what other people think or do.  The hippy can act the way he wishes without being effected by other people's thoughts.  He doesn't care what other people think, just that he does what he likes. Don't confuse this with the laws.  I realize that laws are important and by no means should we reject them.  The type of law I object to is "Social" law.  I believe we should act ourselves and I believe that is the most important part of the hippie philosophy.

2 - Drop out. Leave society as you have known it. Leave it utterly.

From my past notes you have a good idea about my thoughts on society and how they vary. In general I don't care for my present society.  I believe there is a better one to be found and communes like "Morning Star" are a great improvement.

3 - Blow the mind of every straight person you can reach. Turn them on , if not to drugs, then to beauty, love, honesty and fun.

You know my views on drugs (see June 17) so I needn't get into that.  This last part of the philosophy in a way, sums up the whole idea of the hippie.  He believes the more important things in life are love, honesty and fun.  Not necessarily drugs.

I'll have to wait till later to collect my thoughts on the whole subject.  Besides it's 11 o'clock and I have to go to work tomorrow at 6.
